How to calculate baseboard and trim linear feet before buying more
Baseboard takeoffs start with the room perimeter, subtract openings where trim stops, then add a realistic reserve for miters, scarf joints, defects and bad cuts. After that, stock length determines how many pieces you actually need.

For a simple rectangular room, perimeter is two times the room length plus two times the room width. Subtract door openings where baseboard will not run. Add other wall segments, closets or alcoves you plan to trim. Then add a reasonable waste allowance for corners, joints, damaged ends and test cuts.
Linear feet alone still does not tell you whether your leftovers are enough. A pile of short offcuts can contain plenty of total footage while failing to supply a long, visible run without an undesirable joint.

Usually yes when the baseboard stops at the casing. Measure the actual opening or casing layout rather than assuming every doorway is the same width.
How much trim waste should I allow?
Waste varies with the number of corners, joints, defects and the installer's cutting plan. A reserve is useful because one bad miter can consume a meaningful portion of a stock length.
Can short trim offcuts be useful?
Yes, especially for returns, short casing segments and small wall runs, provided the profile, finish and joint placement are appropriate.
