How to plan a project around leftover materials
Start by inventorying full pieces and genuinely usable scraps. Measure the unfinished portion of the project, add an appropriate reserve, and check dimensional constraints before purchasing anything new.
Start with an inventory
Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.
Measure the unfinished work
Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.
Check dimensions, not just totals
Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.
