What can I make with leftover 2×4s?
Start with the usable length of each board or offcut. A pile can contain plenty of total lumber and still fail a project when no individual piece is long enough for the required cut.

Short 2×4 offcuts
Good candidates include blocking, spacers, small repair pieces, jigs and compact frame parts when the material is suitable.
Two- to four-foot pieces
These can work for planter frames, shelf supports, stool or bench components and short utility frames.
Long 2×4 boards
Long matching pieces are more useful for shelves, rails, workbench frames and repairs that require uninterrupted cuts.
Total linear footage is not enough
If your project needs a 5-foot rail, two 30-inch pieces cannot replace it even though both options total 5 feet. Saw kerf and damaged ends reduce usable stock further.
