Using leftover wallpaper in a small space

Closets, cabinet backs and small feature areas can make good use of remnants. Pattern matching can consume more material than raw square-foot coverage suggests.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Verify dye lot, pattern repeat and roll direction.
• Count usable full-height drops rather than area alone.
• Reserve the best matching pieces for visible walls.
