Planning a project with plywood offcuts

Plywood offcuts can handle shelves, panels, jigs and small repairs when their dimensions fit the required parts. Area alone does not guarantee a cut will fit, so sketch the required rectangles before cutting.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Record thickness and grade with every offcut.
• Account for saw kerf, grain direction and edge quality.
• Lay out the largest required rectangles before smaller cuts.
