Can leftover lumber cover a small repair?

For blocking, braces and small repairs, short offcuts can be more useful than full boards. Confirm species, dimensions, treatment requirements and structural suitability before using saved material.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Sort by usable length after checking splits, knots and damaged ends.
• Match actual dimensions and species where needed.
• Cut longest required pieces first.
