Can leftover tile finish a backsplash?

Measure the uncovered backsplash width and height, subtract large openings, and keep extra tile for edge cuts and breakage. Mixed scraps can be useful around outlets and short end runs, but color-lot and thickness differences should be checked before installation.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Confirm tile thickness, grout-joint width and edge treatment match the installation.
• Measure outlet, niche and edge cuts individually; small scraps can be useful there.
• Dry-lay visible areas before cutting.
