Using leftover flooring for repairs

Saved planks are especially useful when the original color or product is discontinued. Count undamaged full planks first, then measure usable offcuts. Verify locking profiles and direction before removing existing boards.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Verify plank thickness, locking profile and direction.
• Reject warped, moisture-damaged or chipped pieces.
• Preserve required stagger and transition details.
