Using leftover decking for repairs

Saved deck boards can be valuable for replacing damaged sections. Confirm board profile, thickness, span, fastener requirements and weathering differences before installation.

Start with an inventory

Count full pieces separately from partial pieces. Measure scraps by their usable dimensions rather than assuming every remnant can be used. Set aside damaged, warped, stained or otherwise unsuitable material.

Measure the unfinished work

Measure only what remains to be completed. Include a reasonable reserve for cuts, breakage, pattern matching or defects. The appropriate reserve varies by material and project complexity.

Check dimensions, not just totals

Total area or linear footage is only the first test. A scrap can contain enough material by area and still be the wrong shape for a required cut. Verify the actual layout before cutting or purchasing.

Project-specific checks

• Match board width, thickness, profile and material.
• Check rot, fastener holes and damaged ends.
• Confirm joist landing points before counting short pieces.
